sKey Skills

The Bend Nordic Youth Club and Bend Nordic Development Team have a new list of skills to accomplish.

Coaches will look for each of the following sKey Skills and mark them off at the end of each practice.

Skiers will be rewarded for their sKey Skills at our end of the season awards party (date and location TBD).

Youth Club skiers who accomplish 10 sKey skills will receive a Bronze certificate. 20 sKey Skills will receive a Silver certificate and 30 sKey Skills will receive a Gold Certificate.

For Development Team skiers: 20 sKey Skills will receive a Bronze certificate, 40 sKey Skills will receive Silver and 60 or more sKey Skills will claim the Gold.

Youth sKey Skills

Technique/Fitness:

¨  Can balance and glide on one ski.

¨  Skied over stadium jump without crashing.

¨  Showed and explained V1 vs. V2.

¨  Showed and explained classic stride.

¨  Showed and explained double pole.

¨  Showed and explained kick double pole.

¨  Skied up a steep hill.

¨  Skied down a steep hill.

Sportsmanship/Teamwork:

¨  Fully participated in games today.

¨  Fully participated in drills today.

¨  Helped load skis today.

¨  Helped unload skis today.

¨  Helped carry skis today.

¨  Helped sort skis/poles today.

¨  Helped hang up ski bags to dry.

¨  Encouraged a teammate during a race, relay or interval.

¨  Helped a teammate (find a seat in the van, put on equipment, find skis etc.)

¨  Followed directions today.

¨  Picked up and threw away trash from floor of van or wax room (even if it wasn’t yours).

Hardware:

¨  Brought skate gear for skate day.

¨  Brought classic gear for classic day.

¨  Boots and bindings match today.

¨  Found own skis and poles today.

¨  Showed coach your name written on your skis, poles and boots.

¨  Put on own equipment, including pole straps, unassisted.

¨  Wore water belt, hat and gloves for entire practice.

¨  Brought a backpack with extra clothing, water and snack.

¨  Cleaned kick wax off of ski w/ putty knife (under coach supervision).

¨  Asked coach to demonstrate glide waxing.

¨  Checked lost and found bucket for missing gear.

¨  Brought and used 2 ski ties.

Devo sKey Skills

Technique/Fitness:

¨  Skied up a steep hill.

¨  Skied down a steep hill.

¨  Can balance and glide on one ski.

¨  Can glide uphill.

¨  Can demonstrate a snowplow vs.  tuck.

¨  Skied over stadium jump without crashing.

¨  Showed and explained V1 vs. V2.

¨  Showed and explained classic stride

¨  Showed and explained double pole.

¨  Showed and explained kick double pole.

¨  Showed and explained a herringbone.

¨  Fully participated in games today.

¨  Fully participated in drills today.

¨  Explored all types of terrain today.

¨  Explored all types of snow conditions today.

¨  Demonstrated the basic athletic stance.

¨  Demonstrated good skate body position.

¨  Demonstrated good classic body position.
