Bend Endurance Academy – COVID-19 Response for Current Climbing Programs

From Climbing Program Director – Mike Rougeux

As many of you likely have, we’ve been paying close attention to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Recently, you have received communication from USA Climbing regarding the cancellation of Open Sport and Speed Nationals this weekend, and the removal of qualification for Regional Championships through local competition participation. In our Region, we have been notified that the Rogue Rock Gym competition has been cancelled.  We expect will other host facilities following suit.

In order to do our part to protect the climbing community and limit the spread of the Coronavirus amongst the broader community here in Bend, we will be temporarily suspending climbing practices starting Monday, March 16th until Monday, March 30th.

This decision has not been made lightly and is a result of collaboration with the BEA Board of Directors, and the management team and ownership at Bend Rock Gym.

During the time while activities are suspended we will continue to monitor what our local and regional public health officials are recommending in order to best serve our community. We will also be working closely with Bend Rock Gym managers to ensure we are providing a responsible return to practices and get us all back to climbing together in the safest environment we can provide. There are a lot of unknowns and uncertainties at this time, and this two week break will allow us to formulate the best informed course of action for our athletes, coaches, staff, and our community.

For those who are enrolled or registered for upcoming USA Climbing events; I will be keeping you up to date on how we will be proceeding as more information becomes available from USA Climbing and the host facilities.

I will also be sending a separate email regarding our upcoming Bishop Spring Break Trip.

In the meantime, we ask that all BEA participants who do elect to go to the BRG on their own, to please do your part to help limit the impact and spread of COVID-19 within our community. Of importance specific to the activity of rock climbing is that everyone who climbs in the gym be vigilant with following recommendations from the Oregon Health Authority. Please be sure to wash your hands thoroughly when you enter the gym. Also, frequent and thorough hand washing during your session is of the utmost importance.  If you are feeling under the weather, please refrain from visiting Bend Rock Gym and other public places.

Please know that Bend Endurance Academy will continue to evaluate this dynamic situation and keep the best interest of our families and community in mind while making these decisions.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions
